"Where I Belong"
To be a citizen from nowhere.
To become a someone all the while being a no one.
We want to own something & we ain’t going back to nowhere.
Pick a spot, any spot on the map that’ll have us.
Even if they stop us, and the culture leaks out, at least we’ll have us.
Just as long as we’re not them.
Turns out we are them, reduced to a color instead of a place or a tribe.
Black as the disco, Black as the corners of the mind.
Oh, to be a child of an immigrant.
Funny as time, they fought for legitimacy, as do I.
I guess none of us really felt belonging. We finally can agree on something.
Home was beautiful. Looking out for each other isn’t profound; it's what we're supposed to do, like breathing. The smog doesn’t make either easy.
It seems like the ground's shifting towards the sea every day.
Are we being drawn back home with the tide?
All of us got here, some forced, and some persuaded.
The centuries divide us. How did we let that happen?
We're supposed to be kin.
