Born on a Tuesday
Exhibition Dates: May 31 - July 11, 2025
Born on a Tuesday celebrated Gallery Director Jumaane N’Namdi’s 50th birthday through an intimate and deeply personal exhibition centered on the relationships he has cultivated throughout his life in the arts. The exhibition brought together portraits and works depicting Jumaane created by artists who have encountered, observed, and interpreted him over the years.
Featuring works by Ed Clark, Richard Mathew, Kandy G Lopez, Stephen Arboite, Yashua Klos, Derrick Adams, Amani Lewis, Tylonn J. Sawyer, Rashid Johnson, Henry Taylor, Charles Spears, Allen Stringfellow, and Senghor Reid, the exhibition offered a rare opportunity to see the gallerist become the subject. Across generations, mediums, and artistic perspectives, each work revealed a different interpretation of the same individual.
Together, the works formed a visual biography, one shaped not simply by Jumaane’s career, but by the artists and relationships that have defined it. Born on a Tuesday celebrated 50 years of life while reflecting the reciprocal nature of Jumaane’s relationship with the artists: a career spent presenting, supporting, and advocating for their work, reconsidered through the ways those artists have chosen to see and represent him.
